Wakuda Restaurant, located in the grand lobby of Marina Bay Sands, Singapore, offers an exquisite Japanese omakase dining experience. To complement its culinary excellence, the restaurant required an acoustic environment that fosters comfort and intimacy. Aural-Aid collaborated with Kingsmen Projects Pte. Ltd., Kyriacou Architects, and Sennen Design Pte. Ltd. to implement a tailored acoustic solution.
Aural-Aid, a leader in acoustic treatment and design, was commissioned to implement a tailored solution that addressed these acoustic challenges while preserving the restaurant’s sophisticated aesthetics. Collaborating with Kingsmen Projects Pte. Ltd., Kyriacou Architects, and Sennen Design Pte. Ltd., Aural-Aid delivered a design that seamlessly integrated performance with artistic excellence².
Restaurants, particularly those situated in busy urban hubs like Marina Bay Sands, face unique acoustic challenges. Excessive noise from conversations, kitchen operations, and surrounding areas can disrupt the dining experience. Hard surfaces such as glass, concrete, and polished wood often intensify these issues, causing sound to bounce unpredictably across the space. Without careful planning, even beautifully designed interiors can struggle to offer a comfortable auditory environment.
For Wakuda, maintaining a serene and intimate environment was critical to aligning with its high-end branding. The goal was to create a space where guests could engage comfortably without raising their voices or straining to hear. Without proper acoustic treatment, sound reflections and reverberation could create a noisy, uncomfortable atmosphere, detracting from the overall experience³.
Timberix™ Microperforated Panels
To achieve superior sound control, Aural-Aid installed Timberix™ microperforated V3.6/1.8/0.5 acoustic panels. These state-of-the-art panels feature approximately 500,000 microperforations per square meter, allowing for effective resonance absorption. Paired with an acoustic substrate, this setup reduced reverberation times significantly, ensuring optimal noise control without compromising on the restaurant’s aesthetic⁴.
Artistic Integration
In an innovative move, the panels were custom-painted by renowned Japanese artist Jun Inoue. His artwork, titled The Ingredients That Arrived, was inspired by the culinary journey of Wakuda’s dishes. The panels were transported to Japan for this artistic customization before being reinstalled at the venue. This integration of art and acoustic design created a unique visual and auditory experience, setting Wakuda apart from conventional dining spaces⁵.
Enhanced Dining Experience
The reduction in ambient noise ensures guests can converse comfortably, even during peak hours. This aligns with Wakuda’s commitment to providing an exceptional dining experience.
Aesthetic Harmony
Jun Inoue’s bespoke artwork enhances the restaurant’s visual appeal, merging functionality with an artistic narrative that reflects the restaurant’s culinary ethos.
Sustainability
The Timberix™ panels were crafted with sustainability in mind, utilizing low VOC materials and eco-friendly manufacturing processes. This commitment to sustainability supports the green building initiatives prevalent in Singapore⁶.
Flexibility and Longevity
The durability of Timberix™ panels ensures long-lasting performance, reducing the need for frequent replacements. Their modular design also allows for easy maintenance and future upgrades.
Customization for High-End Spaces
